Our approach into Rockford’s Runway 19 was cloudy, but at least we were descending directly into the wind.
At Burlington, we crabbed our approach into a 15-knot crosswind while navigating the RNAV (GPS) Runway 11 approach while in the air. As we prepared to touch down, the crosswind reduced to 10 knots.
Careful attention had to be kept to touching down on the runway with the upwind main landing gear. On this case, it was the starboard main gear. To protect the tires, we needed to avoid putting a side load on to the gear.
Because 100LL was selling at $4.39 per gallon, this side trip would have its benefits. Gas was two dollars more expensive from our regular provider.
Thanks to CFII Alex Toepper for mentoring me on this thrilling flight.
After the flight, we learned about a TBM 700 fatally simultaneously crashing into a gravel pit near Monroe, Wisconsin. The information is preliminary, but it sounds like the crash was the result of a failed missed approach. The victims and their families are in our thoughts and prayers.
