Catalyst Impact Protection iPhone XS Review - The ONE case to rule them all!

If there was one case I'd settle for, it would be the Catalyst Impact Protection. It's slim, protective and it handles well. What more can you ask from an iPhone XS case?

It’s not often I’m surprised by new iPhone cases. Why? Because most companies will just re-hash existing cases for new iPhones. It’s not very often that companies come up with something new. Not Catalyst though!

With the Catalyst Impact Protection, with my updated scoring system, I’ve given this case a score of 5 eh’s out of 5. As the title of the video says, this is going to be the one case that rules them all.

When it comes to design, the Catalyst impact protection is thin and light. The only thing worth noting is that it is a bit wider than the average case but I personally haven’t found wide cases being problematic with the iPhone X. Maybe with the iPhone 8 Plus but not normal 8 or X.

The Catalyst Impact Protection feels very solid as it fits your iPhone X quite well. I was initially a little apprehensive about the minute give at the top of the case but it hasn’t really bothered me since day one. The materials on the Catalyst Impact Protection look like they would be very slick but the blend of TPU they used in the case keeps your iPhone from slipping around easily on flat surfaces.

My only gripe with the case is the clear back as it will show fingerprinting quite easily. There is a series of small dots on the back of the clear polycarbonate that helps hide the fingerprints a bit. Now prior to the iPhone X and 8, fingerprints on clear cases really bothered me but now that Apple’s decided to use glass on the back, the default state of my iPhone is “fingerprinty” so this is less of an issue now.

The clear back is raised slightly so sliding the back of the case along a flat surface won’t result in it being scratched.

Accessing your iPhone X is great in the Catalyst Impact Protection. If you’ve been watching my reviews for a while, you’ll know that I’m a big fan of the rotary switch on cases. It’s way better than the tiny cutouts you’d find on similar cases like the LifeProof Slam or Otterbox Pursuit. The buttons on the case were another feature that surprised me. I wasn’t expecting this smaller than average buttons that sit almost flush against the case to be so responsive. Personally, I would have liked the power/sleep button to be a little larger to follow the button on the iPhone X.

The cutouts at the bottom of the case are large enough for big lightning cables. The camera cutout has a matte finish to it to ensure that light and the flash aren’t reflected back into the camera.

Last but not least is the fact that you can attach a wrist strap to the case. The wrist strap attachment point just adds to the functionality of the case as you can add a bit more security to your iPhone for those times that you’re out of normal element.

The Catalyst Impact Protection is a tough case with 3m drop protection for the corners. And Catalyst is very specific at pointing out the fact that it is only for corners. I asked about the face first protection and was told that the iPhone’s screen would still break if it was dropped on a rocky or pebble strewn corner. Huh. Who would have known?

I dropped the iPhone X in the Catalyst Impact Protection from a variety of heights between 6 to 15 ft. Check out the video to see them all.

At the end of the day, my iPhone X came out without a scratch. One of the drops resulted in a semi-face first drop which chipped the screen protector but that drop was from 10 ft so I wasn't too upset.
