On the 25 May 2023 I stopped to see the Laurel Run coal seam mine fire steam vents and fissures. I took temperature and carbon monoxide readings. The fire burns 200-300' (60-90 meters) below the surface at a temperature excess of 1000°F (540°C)! Laurel Run is an abandoned town just south east of Wilkes Barre. The fire started in December 1915 (longer than Centralia) and still burns to the day. A similar scenario happened with Centralia 40 miles to southwest. The Laurel Run steam vents are easily accessible from the road.
