FINALLY good prints on my unipolar DIY 3D printer!! | S2 episode 3 - extruder upgrade

It's time to put a decent extruder on my wooden DIY 3D printer! With a new, much fancier printer build coming up very soon, I absolutely need this printer in good shape since it'll serve as a RepStrap.
Since in the last episode we found out the extruder was to blame for the majority of the print quality issues I was experiencing, I designed a new, printable extruder to replace the janky unipolar 28BYJ-48-driven one. It's nothing fancy, just your average geared extruder from around 2016, but it uses a stepper motor and gears that were scavenged from e-waste.

If you wait for a sale and then try to go for the cheapest option (like I did), you can sometimes get it for less than $10 a spool depending on the shipping. Also, of course, if you ACTUALLY need good prints and don't have to chuck half your prints in the trash anyway because the stupid printer malfunctioned, this is probably not for you. (my standards just aren't that high yet ;)
