Another bell on the testing stand at Taylors

This is a bell from Tong in Bradford, a ring of six which was previously hung from canons on wooden headstocks.

Canon retaining headstocks have been fitted to all six bells and because of the varied dynamics of bells with canon retaining headstocks, the swing times are checked on each bell to ensure the dynamics of the ring as a whole are correct, to ensure that they can be rung easily.

The headstock sits against a resin pad, which is cast onto the top of the bell and drilled through (hence the skirf falling out of the top of the headstock when the bel is first swung).

After this the swing time of the clapper was measured and recorded too. After this has been done for all six of the Tong bells, some clever mathematics will be done to see if they all swing at the right speed.

Tong are at present being rehung in the reconstituted Warner frame. The back five were cast by Edward Seller II in 1730.
In common with previous bells from the York foundry Edward II gives bells fine, decorative inscriptions with floral stamps, and backwards Ns.
