Clean Fuels: Introducing Storage Tanks of the Future
Kyriaki Koupepidou is a second-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical Sciences at University of Limerick, under the supervision of Prof. Michael Zaworotko. Her research interests include synthesis of switching sorbents for gas storage and water harvesting applications. She received her B.Sc. in Materials Chemistry from University of Cyprus in 2020. She was awarded the first prize for Students in Research from the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation for her undergraduate thesis, which was performed under the supervision of Prof. Anastasios Tasiopoulos. Kyriaki plans to pursue a research career that will allow her to address world-threatening problems.
The world is currently facing a crisis. Water scarcity, extreme weather events and risk of coastal areas being submerged are all consequences of human-induced global warming. While climate change cannot be reversed, a global shift towards green energy sources can have a tremendous impact on preventing further damage and sustaining life in the long-term. However, identifying new energy sources is not enough; appropriate cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology tools must be developed to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon future. This research focuses on fabricating materials that can store and deliver biogas under ambient conditions for transportation purposes.
