The Untold Story of the Ndebele | Descendant of King Lobengula Speaks

I had the honour of speaking with Nqobile Khumalo, a descendant of Sidojiwe, from the royal line of King Lobengula and King Mzilikazi. He shared powerful family stories passed down through generations — about migration to Gokwe, the tsetse fly disease that wiped out cattle, and how his grandfather later moved to Harare.

He also explained how the Ndebele got their name “AmaTebele” — men with big shields, as called by the Tswana people.

Most importantly, he reminded us that as parents we must teach IsiNdebele at home, just like our children are taught many subjects at school. This is how we keep our identity alive.*
