Program Note:
Structures in Concrete is inspired by three brutalist buildings in Washington, D.C.: the Robert C. Weaver Federal Building, the Hirshhorn Museum, and the D.C. Metro. These three buildings, while built in the brutalist style, feature soft, rounded forms, ornamented by grids of rectilinear indents, giving them a graceful, yet still monolithic appearance. Being from the D.C. area, I've spent a lot of time in the city, and have always loved how these brutalist concrete structures made up of simple repetitive patterns can yield such beautiful structures. Structures in Concrete is based around this same idea, where simple musical ideas build upon each other in repetitive patterns to form an evolving wall of sound.
Structures in Concrete was composed for the UNCG Present-Continuous New Music Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Alejandro Rutty.
