Sunday Longplay - Vegas Stakes (SNES)

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm revisiting my first exposure to casino gambling games! Welcome to Vegas Stakes on the SNES! Released in April 1993 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Vegas Stakes (also known as Las Vegas Dream in Japan) is the sequel to an NES game called Vegas Dream (also known as Viva Las Vegas in Japan), and is also one of the few games that supports the Super NES Mouse that came packaged with Mario Paint. In this game, you go to Las Vegas with a group of friends with $1000 to your name with the ultimate goal of winning $10 Million.

There are five casino games you can play: Blackjack, Slot Machines, Roulette, Craps, and Seven-Card Stud Poker (this game was made before Texas Hold 'Em became the golden standard). There are also several different casinos you can go to with different atmosphere, music, and levels of stakes. The default casino is the Golden Paradise (medium stakes), but you can also go to The Hideaway (low stakes), the Buffalo Head (higher stakes), or The 2020 (highest stakes). Once you win $100,000, you'll be crowned a high roller and be moved to the final casino of the game, the Laurel Palace, which has a very fancy room, fancy atmosphere, and no-limit stakes. You can win a lot of money very quickly there, but lose it all just as quick.

On top of the normal gambling, you'll also have random interactions with your casino friends and also other random gamblers. These interactions can either help you make money or lose it depending on a random outcome. Sometimes a random patron will leave you a winning lottery ticket, other times they'll pickpocket you and make you lose half of your money. Like the casino games themselves, it's all up to chance.

You can play this game with 1 or 2 players. However, in 2-player mode, there are no random interactions and you can't play Poker because you'd be able to see each other's cards.

Should you reach the ultimate goal of $10,000,000, you get to say what kind of dream you want to achieve with your winnings, and after the end credits, the game says that your dream came true.
