New Year, New You – Part 1: Order into Chaos
(Genesis 1:1–3; 2 Corinthians 5:17)

The start of a new year awakens a deep longing for change. We make resolutions, set goals, and hope that this year will finally be different. Yet for many people, those hopes fade quickly and give way to discouragement or even hopelessness—the belief that real change simply isn’t possible.

This message begins where the Bible begins: with God speaking order into chaos. Genesis opens not with self-help advice or human effort, but with a God who creates light in darkness, form in emptiness, and meaning where nothing yet makes sense. Chaos does not repel God; it invites His creative power. From creation onward, Scripture shows that God does His best work not after lives are fixed, but while they are still broken.

The sermon reminds us that God stands above creation, time, and circumstance. Because He is not bound by the universe, chaos never gets the final word. The God who brought the universe into existence is fully able to bring order into our lives, no matter how disordered they may feel. True faith, then, is not confidence in our ability to fix ourselves, but trust in God’s ability to do what we cannot.

We also see that God brings order in two distinct ways. Sometimes He creates something entirely new—new life in Christ, a true spiritual beginning through faith and obedience to the gospel. Other times, He reshapes what already belongs to Him, patiently forming and renewing believers step by step as they learn to walk with Him. In both cases, transformation is relational, not mechanical. God speaks, invites trust, and asks for obedient faith.

As a new year begins, the invitation is not simply to try harder or make better promises, but to trust the God who brings order out of chaos and faithfully completes the work He begins. Real new beginnings start not with our resolutions, but with confidence in a faithful Creator who is still speaking light into darkness.
