Written in 1944 after the sudden death of his close friend and musicologist, Ivan Sollertinsky.
It begins with an agitated, almost manic "Allegretto" dance, often linked to Jewish folk music (klezmer), but presented in a dark, frenzied way. These aren't joyful folk dances; they are "dances of death," a forced, macabre march reflecting the genocide and horrors of the concentration camps.
It revisits the solemn, chorale-like piano theme from the previous Largo movement, now as a mournful backdrop. The music becomes increasingly desperate and fragmented, with ghostly, wailing figures in the strings, leading to an almost inaudible, torturous ending in E Major, signifying exhaustion and resignation rather than triumph.
