This is my attempt at concisely documenting the process for replacing the laser in my SCPH-1001 PS1 with the more robust KSM-440BAM laser from a SCPH-101 PSOne. Unfortunately, this repair project didn't end in success, but I wanted to show others the potential pitfalls of replacing the laser assembly. I am suspecting a power supply issue, or a lack of laser tuning knowledge is keeping me from success on this project.
The original laser in my console was a KSM-440ACM model. Unfortunately, I do not have a good link for where to find these drives. The one I found was a one-off listing from a console scrapper that had pulled a working laser from an PSOne.
