Shine On You Crazy Diamond is a song by Pink Floyd , written by David Gilmour , Richard Wright and Roger Waters in 1974 ; the song is dedicated to the former member of the band, Syd Barrett , who had left the group in 1968 ; the song, divided into two parts and nine movements, lasts a total of 26 minutes and is the longest of the group. The song was performed for the first time during the French tour of 1974 with the title of " Shine On " and the following year it was included in the concept album Wish You Were Here .The musical part was composed mainly by Gilmour and Wright with some intervention by Waters, who also wrote the lyrics after having had the inspiration from Gilmour who, during a rehearsal, played four notes that make up what became known as Syd's Theme and which served as the basis for creating the entire song .The band wanted it to be contained in only one side of the album but then, due to its length, it was divided into two parts on each side of the album.

Part 1

The first part, from 0:00 to 3:53, is a crescendo with a fluid and ethereal progression of chords in the background made by the band members running their fingers along the rim of wine glasses filled to different levels. These sounds were originally supposed to be on an album called Household Objects which was supposed to feature sounds originating from household objects (hence the title). Then Gilmour uses his Fender Stratocaster to play the guitar solo .

Part 2

The second part starts from minute 3:53 to minute 6:26 and introduces the four-note theme characteristic of this song and known as " Syd 's Theme " [ 6 ] , played on the electric guitar which is then joined by the drums and bass. The rhythm is then taken up by an electric guitar solo by Gilmour. This theme recurs throughout the album in different ways.

Part 3

The third part runs from 6:26 to 8:40. Gilmour's solo transitions into a Minimoog synthesizer solo by keyboardist Wright, who then slows down and begins Gilmour's third guitar solo. This solo was left out of the live performance on the 1994 album Pulse .

Part 4

The fourth part goes from minute 8:40 to minute 11:08 and contains the sung part.

Part 5

The fifth part runs from 11:08 to 13:32 and adds Dick Parry 's baritone saxophone solo which then switches to a tenor saxophone and there is a tempo change at 12:02. This is all accompanied by a guitar riff from Gilmour and bass from Waters. The tenor saxophone then fades out; taken up by a buzz that marks the start of the next track on the album, Welcome to the Machine .

Part 6

The sixth part goes from minute 0:00 to minute 4:38. From the wind of Wish You Were Here we move on to a bass riff which is then added to a synthesizer solo, and then a solo that Gilmour plays with the steel guitar which grows in intensity and leads to part 7.

Part 7

The seventh part runs from minute 4:38 to minute 6:02. Another guitar solo transitions part 6 into part 7 and reintroduces the central theme of the song and a new sung part.
In the line " Shine On You Crazy Diamond " there is an acronym (SYD) which indicates the founder and former member of Pink Floyd.

Part 8

The eighth part goes from minute 6:02 to minute 9:00.

Part 9

The ninth part runs from minute 9:00 to minute 12:27. At the end Wright plays on the Minimoog a part taken from the song See Emily Play by Barrett.
