India after Independence [Lec 16] Lecture of 2 December 2014, UCLA Fall 2014 course. This lecture is devoted to the question of women in India today, their status, their role in public and political life, and the issues that affect them in particular. We begin with a consideration of the evaluative scale in the 19th century: civilizations were to be judged by how they treated their women. Discussion of women in India in the public sphere, first half of twentieth century; informal labor sector. Incident of harrassment of young women and girls; Indian women scientists; women's movement India; Tarun Tejpal case; Shah Bano case; dowry deaths in India.
