Vatican City, officially known as the Vatican City State, is an independent city-state entirely surrounded by Rome, Italy. It is the smallest country in the world, covering just about 44 hectares (110 acres) and with a population of around 800 people. Established as an independent state in 1929 by the Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Italy, Vatican City serves as the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church.
It is the residence of the Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church, and houses numerous important religious and cultural landmarks. Among its most notable features are St. Peter’s Basilica, the largest church in the world, and St. Peter’s Square, a grand piazza where large gatherings, including papal addresses, take place. Vatican City also contains the Vatican Museums, which feature some of the world’s most famous art collections, including Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Despite its small size, Vatican City holds significant global influence, both religiously and politically. The Holy See, the governing body of the Catholic Church, operates from Vatican City but is a sovereign entity recognized internationally.
