ภาวะน้ำคั่งในโพรงสมอง ( Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus ) คือภาวะที่น้ำหล่อเลี้ยงไขสันหลังในโพรงสมองมีมากจนเกินไป นำไปสู่อาการสามอย่างดังต่อไปนี้ : กลั้นปัสสาวะลำบาก เดินโคลงเคลง และความจำเสื่อม
อาการเหล่านี้เกิดขึ้นได้อย่างไร? พูดให้เข้าใจง่ายก็คือ เป็นเพราะว่าตอนที่น้ำหล่อสมองไขสันหลังเหล่านี้มีมากเกินไปในโพรงสมองมันก็จะไปกดทับโครงสร้างที่สำคัญต่างๆในสมองครับ
อาการเดินโคลงเคลงหรือทรงตัวไม่ดีนี้เป็นเพราะว่าน้ำหล่อสมองไขสันหลังมีมากจนเกินไปและไปกดทับโพรงสมองด้านข้างและขัดขวางการทำงานของเนื้อเยื่อ corticospinal tract ซึ่งควบคุมการเคลื่อนไหวของแขนขา
ความจำเสื่อมเนื่องมาจากน้ำหล่อสมองไขสันหลังที่มากเกินไปนี้ไปขัดขวางสมองส่วนหน้า ( frontal lobe ) และ subcortex area
ท้ายที่สุดนี้คือ การกลั้นปัสสาวะลำบาก เนื่องมาจากน้ำหล่อสมองไขสันหลังมากดทับและดึง periventricular sacral fibers ของ corticospinal tract ซึ่งเนื้อเยื่อเหล่านี้มีความสำคัญในการควบคุมกระเพาะปัสสาวะของเรา

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a condition when there is an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles leading to triad of symptoms consisting of: urinary incontinence, gait ataxia, and cognitive impairment.
Why do these symptoms occur? Simply because of the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain ventricles impedes on important brain structures.
Symptom of gait ataxia from cerebrospinal fluid filling and expanding the lateral ventricles impeding fiber of corticospinal tract that controls voluntary movement of the limbs.
Cognitive Impairment from cerebrospinal fluid impeding the frontal lobe and subcortex area.
Finally, urinary incontinence, this is from cerebrospinal fluids stretching the periventricular sacral fibers of the corticospinal tract. This fiber is responsible for voluntary control of urinary bladder.
