Day 3 of the Chile Challenge in New Mexico brought some of the toughest rock crawling I’ve ever experienced. We ran two legendary trails — Can Opener and War Path, both known for massive ledges, vertical waterfalls, and obstacles that punish even the most capable buggies.
On Can Opener, the trail earns its name fast. A huge driver-side wall and a deep passenger-side hole lean rigs into a rock outcropping that has peeled the roofs off countless crawlers. I used rear steer to thread the tight squeeze while Shane in TicTac — his Jimmy’s 4x4–built buggy — walked it clean.
Next was the 30-foot vertical waterfall, a mandatory winch climb that hangs you on the line with nothing but sky in the windshield. After clearing Can Opener, we rolled straight into War Path, a 10-rated trail with no breaks and no easy lines.
The Gatekeeper — a 10-foot vertical waterfall — set the tone. We ran a smooth system where each buggy became the winch anchor for the next. The whole crew worked like a well-oiled machine.
But once we were deep into War Path… catastrophe struck.I attempted a ledge I shouldn’t have and broke the driver-side rear axle shaft. A little later, the passenger-side shaft snapped, leaving me with front-wheel drive only. Shane ended up pulling me through obstacles for hours, and the winch fest continued until we finally reached the exit.
Even without video of the chaos, you’ll still see:

✔ Technical climbing lines
✔ Team recovery and trail strategy
