Lui activates her hawk vision, Fubuki and Niko can't believe their eyes

Dr. Fubuki comes crashing through the swinging operating room doors. She scrubs up and slips latex gloves onto her hands with a snap. She takes one look at the patient and goes still.

‘Uh, nurse?’

Nurse Lui puts down the intubation pipe. ‘Yes, doctor?’

‘We work in a hospital, correct?’

‘Yes, doctor.’

‘That’s what I thought.’

‘Is something wrong, doctor?’

‘Is something wrong?’ Dr. Fubuki looks back at the nurse. ‘There’s a tiger on the operating table!’

The tiger sits up. ‘Hi, my name’s Niko.’

‘NURSE!’ screams Dr. Fubuki. ‘Why is there an unanesthetized tiger on my operating table!?’

‘I would administer anesthetic if you’d STOP YELLING AT ME!’ Nurse Lui’s hand slips and she stabs herself with a hypodermic needle filled with a mysterious clear fluid. ‘Oh no.’

Dr. Fubuki is gobsmacked. ‘Lui?’

‘Yes, doctor?’

‘Did you just inject yourself with lidocaine?’

‘No.’ Lui pauses. In a quiet voice, she adds, ‘That was horse tranquilizer.’

‘LUI!’

‘It’s okay! It’s okay! I’m not a horse, I’m a hawk. It shouldn’t have any effe—’

Nurse Lui goes down and takes the tray of medical instruments with her, scattering scalpels and forceps across the tiled floor.

The tiger and the doctor just stare.

‘So!’ chirps Dr. Fubuki. ‘Would you like to reschedule this surgery, or…?’

‘I should probably go to an actual veterinarian, shouldn’t I?’ says Niko.

‘That would be wise. Although, I can’t quite say I understand what your trouble is.’ Dr. Fubuki checks Niko’s chart. ‘You say you broke your… funny bone?’

Niko sighs. ‘I used to be a comedian, you know.’

‘I’m sure you were hilarious. Now, about this “funny bone”…’

‘Hilarious? I brought down every house I told a joke in.’ Niko hops off the table and grabs the doctor by the front of her spotless white scrubs and lifts her up off the ground. ‘Ya gotta fix me, Doc. Ya gotta! Makin’ people laugh was everything I had.’

Dr. Fubuki kicks her feet wildly. ‘Okay! Okay! Put me down and we’ll see what we can do.’

When Niko puts her down, she adjusts her outfit and smooths out her wrinkles. ‘Ahem. There’s only one fix for a broken funny bone.’ She turns on her heel and marches with her hands tucked in the small of her straightened back toward a set of cabinets. After rummaging around, she comes back with a plain band-aid. She plasters it on Niko’s elbow. ‘There. All better.’ She steps back to admire her handiwork and smiles. ‘I’ll have my office send you the bill.’

Niko snatches her before she can turn to go. ‘You think this is some kind of joke?’ she snarls. ‘This is my livelihood, Doc! There ain’t nothin’ HUMERUS about breaking your funny bone!’

On the floor, Nurse Lui’s eyes snap open. Her upper body jolts up like someone stepping on a rake. She screeches, ‘Ha-HAAAH!’ and then goes back to her tranquilizer-induced slumber.

The tiger and the doctor just stare.

‘You were saying?’ says the doctor.

Niko lets the doctor go. She runs a hand over the bandage on her arm. ‘You did it. You fixed me.’ She reaches out and envelops the doctor in a big hug. ‘You’re a miracle worker, Doc!’

Dr. Fubuki patiently waits for the hug to end. She steps back, clears her throat, and says, ‘The only miracle here is modern medicine.’

‘Hey,’ says Niko. ‘They say laughter is the best medicine. I guess that kinda makes me a doctor too, huh.’

Dr. Fubuki laughs dryly. ‘Haha, no.’
