Why rangoli , kolam
From time immemorial we have been fascinated by the colours, patterns, designs, symmetry, geometry in nature. The beauty of flowers, the arrangement of leaves, colourful birds are some examples in nautre. We humans try to imitate nature in our own way through drawings, patterns .All countries, cultures have their own traditions, customs ,hobbies that bring out colourful designs and patterns. They have all contributed to a wonderful collage of designs and patterns, a huge one but still a minuscule portrayal of what nature can display ostentatiously. All countries, cultures, customs have made our world more beautifulto live in. All countries big and small, all cultures past and present have made their own contributions to our "collage of arts "One of the elements of this collage is the Indian RANGOLI or KOLAM
Rangolisansdots - a name chosen by me for social media literally means Rangoli without dots. No collection of rangoli or kolam can be complete without rangoli with dots. So there are as many dot rangoli designs as there are without dots.
Welcome ! I am Sudha Balaji, from Omalur near Salem, Tamil Nadu. After completing my education in Sri Sarada College for Women in Salem I moved to Chennai. .
I learnt this simple art from my mother . She lived in Vizianagarm near Vishakapattinam when she was young. 30 days of Dhanurmasam , Bhogi and Sankranthi were her favourite festivals because she could show off her rangolis that she learnt from her mother !! That is how this art has been passed on from generation to generation. Nowadays with nuclear families , social media is the best way for learning this art through videos and images. So I started a blog ( website ) first in 2012 . The images in the blog have been viewed millions and millions of times !! I was pleasantly surprised when it becaome very popular without any promotion. However there were many requests for step by step procedure , I started uploading kolam videos on YouTube and pictures showing the steps on the website.

Rangoli tips
1) I use a mixture of kola podi and rice flour ( dry arisi maavu ). For three parts kolam powder I mix one part rice flour.
2) How to draw kolam
The powder is taken in the right hand and using the thumb and index finger
3) My mother said that even holding kolapodi should be graceful and should look beautiful to one who watches a kolam being drawn .She also said that this is a divine art and hence should be practised with the sanctity it deserves.
4) How to draw thin lines
Take minimum quantity of white rangoli to get thin lines , the more we take thicker the lines are.
5) How to place dots ( pulli or chukki )
Again take as less powder as possible. The more the podi thicker the dots. Sometimes the dots are so thick that they look like small lines !!
6) When we fill colours , they may spill on the white kolam. So it is good practice to draw the pattern again with white podi after filling the colours particularly when we decorate for festivals like Diwali, New Year and Pongal ( Sankranthi in Telugu, Kannada, Marathi )
7) Double line or double stroke rangoli that are popular in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka i.e South India are very beautiful rangolis particularly if the two lines are separately visible. I have a weakness of this type. I draw them daily during Margali season
8) Tips on pulli kolam - We have two types called ner pulli and idai pulli or sandhu pulli . It is a good practice to start the central row of dots first then place those above and below . These are called chukki rangoli in Kannda and chukkala muggulu in Telugu . Please not that only if the dot pattern has uniform gaps the dot rangoli will look pretty. Like many other simple things this comes with practice.
For those who may need dot grid templates from thick paper is available in Mumbai.
Why draw kolam
.Kolam is drawn to welcome guests daily and special occasions, is considered to be auspicious . A padi kolam or a colourful rangoli at the entrance means there is a function in the house. Any rangoli muggu decorated with kaavi ( ochre ) colour also indicates that there is a celebration like house warming, wedding, seemantham etc in the house.
