Hidden Grand Canyon Viewpoint Everyone Misses

Today, we're unveiling a treasure that's as elusive as a jackrabbit on a moonlit night. Welcome to Shoshone Point, where the views are grander than a sunset over the prairie.

Before we mosey on, let me share a tale of the Shoshone folks. These illustrious souls roamed from California to Wyoming, their history richer than a gold miner’s bonanza. Shoshone Point stands as a testament to their enduring legacy.

Why don't folks wander to Shoshone Point? This gem ain’t on the official National Park Service map, and there’s no signpost along the road. The park service keeps it under wraps ‘cause it’s a hotspot for private soirees – weddings, family hoedowns, and jamborees. You can book it yourself right here:

Now, how in tarnation do you get there? Hold yer horses, ‘cause I’m fixin’ to steer y’all right.

Enter through Desert View Entrance and approach Shoshone Point from the east. Meander through the forest, pass Duck on a Rock Viewpoint, and about a mile later, you’ll find a dirt parking lot. Slow down and keep yer peepers peeled, 'cause it’s easier to miss than a needle in a haystack.

From the lot, it’s an effortless one-mile amble along an old dirt road. If the gate’s open, there’s a private shindig ahead, so best turn around. If it’s shut, lace up yer boots and start yer hike.

On the hike, ponderosa pines stand tall like sentinels, transitioning to pinyon-juniper woodland near the rim. Ran into a couple of elk grazin’ the forest floor – must’ve been the forest buffet special.

It’s a smooth, flat hike – perfect for families and older folks. Just under a mile in, the canyon unfolds like a desert flower in spring. There’s setup for gatherings – bathrooms, trash bins, and a pavilion with grills.

Further on is the actual “Point”... Watch yer step – no railings, and a tumble’s worse than a three-legged mule in a horse race. The rock formation here’s a favorite of photographers.

Standin’ there, takin’ in the vast canyon, you can spy the west rim of Yaki Point, the east forks of Grapevine Creek, and Tanner Canyon to the north. Take a spell, breathe the invigorating air, and witness one of nature’s greatest masterpieces. There’s a big ol’ rock canopy to shield y’all from the sun. Crack open yer lunch and take a load off.

Shoshone Point… It’s a sight to stir the soul, where earth meets sky in a blaze of glory. Stick around to see the sun dip below the rim, and y’all might just feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. Just remember to bring a flashlight for the hike back – don’t wanna be stumblin’ around like a blindfolded cow in a rodeo.
