The Khekong, also known as Kong-Kong, is a traditional Ladakhi musical instrument that belongs to the mouth harp family, similar to the mouth harps found in Mongolia and other parts of Central Asia.
Played by placing the instrument between the teeth and gently plucking its metal tongue, the Khekong produces a soft, vibrating sound. The rhythm and tone change with the player’s breath and mouth movement, creating a deeply personal and meditative form of music.
In Ladakh, the Khekong was traditionally played for self-expression, relaxation, and quiet moments, rather than public performances. Its sound reflects the silence of the mountains and the everyday musical life of the region. Today, the instrument is rarely seen, making it an important part of Ladakh’s fading intangible cultural heritage.
