Friends, has this ever happened to you? At night, you sit in front of the TV or laptop with your dinner, open Netflix or YouTube, and think, “Today I’ll watch something amazing.” Then you start scrolling. Action movie? Not in the mood today. Comedy? Hmm, I’ve already seen that. Thriller? Not sure how it will be.
Ten minutes pass… then twenty… then half an hour. And what happens in the end? Your food gets cold, and tired of deciding, you either play the same old episode of Tarak Mehta or just turn off the TV and go to sleep.
From the outside, this looks like a small thing, but psychology says there’s a deep reason behind it—called the Paradox of Choice and the Fear of the Best Choice. We grow up believing that more options mean more freedom and happiness. But think about your childhood. There were only one or two TV channels—yet you weren’t confused. You simply enjoyed whatever was on.
Today, we have thousands of movies, yet we feel anxious. Why? Because when options increase, the pressure to make the “right” decision increases too. Even while watching, your mind wonders, “What if the other movie was better?” That fear leads to overthinking—analysis paralysis.
The solution? Don’t be a maximizer—be a satisficer. Choose what meets your needs, enjoy it, and move on. There’s no perfect choice—your happiness makes the choice perfect.
