MTG DRAFTING ADVICE + DECK BUILDING TIPS | S3 EP55 | Super Fast Tortoise

Drafting is a fun format in Magic the gathering. Usually the best way to experience a singular set in the world of magic the gathering. Because when you draft three packs from a set like Tarkir Dragonstorm, you are drafting from that one set, unless you are having a chaos draft. But that is not for today. Drafting in general and what I am talking about is a “pick one card pass the pack” format. What is drafting? What is the one of the best ways to play Magic the gathering? Well upto eight, plus players are given 3 booster packs to draft from, in a pod of up to eight players. Sitting in a round robin fashion, each player opens a pack of magic cards, remove and token or art card from the pack, the proceeds to choose on card from the pack to potentially build a limited sized deck with of 40 cards. After choosing a card, they put that card face-down in front of them. Then the rest of the pack is passed to the player to the left. The player to your right will pass you their pack after they pick there one card. All these actions will repeat, till the pack is out of all its cards. The everyone will open their seconded pack do the same thing as pack one, but this time will pass the pack to the right. Till pack two is gone. Then they will open pack 3, and pass to the left again. Do the same, pick one, pass the pack, repeat the process till the pack is gone. Then with all the picks from your three packs of “pick and pass” you will build a limited sized deck of at least 40 cards from. Then you will compete with that deck againt the other players in your pod.

That explanation was for the people who don't know what drafting is.

What are some tips for drafting for the up and coming player?

First, the first pack, you will look for one of three types of cards and pick the best one. The three types of cards are 1. Win condition, 2. Draw card 3 or .removal... if all three are in pack one, you want to take the strongest between “Win condition and removal” This is from my experience, and is noted that cards in limited can be more powerful than they appear in other formats.

The second piece of advice I have is to look for “deck synergy” over “play synergy,” but keep the two high in your mind. What is the difference between deck synergy and play synergy? Well deck synergy is about keeping a good eye on your Mana fixing, card Draw and removal plus win-conditions. This also may vary little by each archetype, but it is important to remember and keep in mind. What is play synergy? Play synergies is caring about card and archetype synergies, looking for cards that combo with each other because of the archetype that you colors will run. The reason why you look for deck synergy over a draft archetype, is because most archetypes do not have a good draw mechanic or removal mechanic or a good mana fixing mechanic. So you got to do your best to make up for what you are lacking. But both archetype and deck synergies are important.

The third thing is, Signpost cards and removal are key. What is a sign post card? A sign post card is a creature, artifact or enchantment where most time tells you what you want to do in a deck of your colors, or has an ability that rewards you for playing in those colors with an archetypal theme. Like reducing the activated cost of an ability of creature spell, or drawing you a card when you reach a requirement in that color. Ect ect.
