The piece is based on the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Movement I, entitled "Forum" represents the lively, bustling city of Pompeii before the eruption. Movement II, "Tremors," is when the mountain begins to wake; the birds are the first to notice and panic, and the coast becomes stormy. Movement III is the fiery eruption itself, where chaos, panic, and confusion ensues. Finally, Movement IV, "Ashes" represents the haunting stillness left in Vesuvius' wake, lost voices being sealed away, frozen in eternity.
