STORYLINE:
The leaders of India and Pakistan opened formal talks for the first time in two years on Sunday, with the white marble domes of the Taj Mahal a symbolic backdrop to their landmark summit.
Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee appeared relaxed in front of the media before they began talking.
An official said the two leaders discussed a natural gas pipeline from Iran to India, which must pass through Pakistan.
Musharraf tried to restrict the talks to Kashmir, which is claimed by both countries, but then relented and discussed other bilateral issues such as cross-border terrorism and trade concessions.
Kashmir province is the flashpoint that has caused more than five decades of enmity between the neighbours, igniting two of their three wars since independence from Britain in 1947.
India has insisted that talks should address not only Kashmir, but also trade, regional terrorism, nuclear safeguards, drug trafficking and the resumption of cricket matches.
Later India announced that President Musharraf had invited Prime Minister Vajpayee to Pakistan which he had accepted.
In his invitation to Musharraf, Vajpayee said poverty was the common enemy of the two countries, whose economies support more than one fifth of the world's population.
Both leaders realise that if they can end their deep enmity the mushrooming of trade and investment that would follow would greatly ease the poverty plaguing their countries.
And then in the evening President Musharraf and 250 other guests at the official banquet worked their way through a 15-course dinner from as many provinces in India.
The summit has provoked intense media interest and hundreds of journalists from all over the world followed the two leaders when the summit convened in Agra.
Security was intense, with riot police and barricades lining the roads.
