Viktor Orri Árnason – Pärt: Spiegel im Spiegel

Icelandic composer, conductor and producer Viktor Orri Árnason has paid tribute to Arvo Pärt with a meditative recording of ‘Spiegel im Spiegel’. The accompanying video, which Árnason describes as a “moving painting”, is released to coincide with Pärt’s 88th birthday on 11 September. Playing both viola and piano on the recording, Viktor more than captures the sense of stillness and serenity of this mesmeric masterpiece, slowing the tempo in his intimate interpretation to amplify the work’s reflective qualities. He plays the mirrored ascending and descending phrases of the melodic line on the viola. Beneath this, bell-like piano notes sound in the accompaniment, like raindrops softly falling into a pool of water. “To me,” says Árnason, “this is a piece to experience and not to analyse, it’s a spiritual practice of acceptance.”
