In 1862, a group of Union Army soldiers were pursuing a contingent of Confederate Army that they had pushed out of Tucson, Arizona. But, as they made their way across the parched deserts of the Southwest, they were soon in dire need of water. But, on their way to the nearest freshwater spring, they were met with another enemy: the Apache.
And this was an ordinary band of Apache, but a group of warriors assembled by two legendary chiefs: Mangas Coloradas, and his son-in-law Cochise. Cochise had seen his brother and nephews recently executed as prisoners of the Union Army as a result of the tragic “Bascom Affair”. In retaliation, the prisoners which Cochise, Mangas and their warriors had taken had also been brutally killed. And a solemn vow had been made amongst the Chiricahua to combat the U.S. Government with all of their might.
As the Union Soldiers neared Apache Springs, they soon found themselves surrounded by Apache warriors, and cutoff from their critical water supply.
What happened next, known as “The Battle Of Apache Pass”, would change the history of the Old West forever.
