The Boeing 787 Dreamliner wasn't just born out of a need for a new airplane. It was a response to a changing aviation landscape. In the late 1990s, airlines were facing higher costs and new challenges. Boeing, always looking for ways to stay ahead, decided it was time for a major upgrade.

At the time, Boeing noticed that sales of its popular models, the 767 and 747-400, were slowing down. To keep up with the times, Boeing came up with two new ideas for aircraft. One was the 747X, a longer and more efficient version of the 747-400. The other was the Sonic Cruiser, designed to fly 15% faster than other planes at the time (close to the speed of sound) without burning more fuel than the 767. Although a few major airlines, like Continental Airlines, were interested in the Sonic Cruiser, they worried about its operating costs.
