Garmin inReach devices are powerful tools for backcountry communication, but their features can be confusing—especially once you go beyond the basics. In this video, I walk through the most common questions I get (and the ones I think are most important to know) so you can use your inReach with confidence when you’re off the grid.

I start with the biggest one: when it’s okay to hit the SOS button. The short answer—when you’re unsure of a safe outcome. That could mean an injury, getting lost, a vehicle breakdown in the middle of nowhere, or a medical issue that needs expert advice. With two-way messaging, you can communicate directly with dispatchers, who can guide you through self-evacuation or send help if needed. I share real examples, including rescues I’ve been involved in, so you’ll know what to expect.

We also cover how long rescues can take and the factors that affect response time—location, weather, your condition, and the availability of resources. I talk about why you should always be prepared to spend the night outside, even if you think your hike is short and safe. I also explain how rescues can play out: sometimes it’s a helicopter, but often it’s ground teams, or even instructions on how to get yourself to safety.
