Rights of Prisoners of War (POWs) Under Geneva Convention

Ukrainian and Russian forces have exchanged prisoners, in what Ukraine said was the first soldier-for-soldier swap since Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, ordered troops into the neighbouring country late last month.

There have also been reports of violation of rights of POWs on both sides. Ukrainian authorities have posted videos on social media of captured Russian soldiers which amounts to them being humiliated or intimidated. Such treatment of prisoners of war, or POWs, violates protections under the Geneva Conventions intended to ensure dignified treatment of captured combatants on all sides. Prisoners of War (PoW) are protected by the Geneva Conventions of 1949 (The Third Convention) and their Additional Protocols. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has a mandate to protect victims of international and internal armed conflicts. Such victims include war wounded persons, prisoners, refugees, civilians, and other non-combatants.
