Generally considered to be one of the finest directors to ever come out of Spain, Pedro Almodovar has firmly established himself as a major player in international cinema ever since the release of his debut film Pepi, Luci, Bom and Other Girls on the Heap in 1980. And the reason he’s so highly regarded is because his movies often run that gambit of human emotions so well, with them covering topics as wide and varied as family, crime, motherhood, and LGBTQ issues.

Yes, being an openly gay man, LGBTQ issues have understandably been something Pedro Almodovar has felt the need to focus on and highlight throughout his career, with many of his movies touching upon this topic. And this has meant that even if his work is pretty much exclusively made in the Spanish language, many English speaking audiences have been able to find something to identify with in films such as Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Tie Me Up!
