Common App Essay:

SHAZAM!

My favorite part of a superhero movie is when the "average" main character first discovers they've developed amazing powers. I watch with fascination as they struggle to understand their talents, limits, and drawbacks, and I empathized with their desire to keep it secret. Growing up in a science and biomedical household where my mother has a neurogenetics background, my father practices medicine, and my younger MENSA sister hopes to pursue interstellar botany, I found myself heavily involved in science from an early age. I was a robotics champion and had a provisional patent for a high tech firefighter's helmet by the time I was nine. So when the applause I got from playing Rip Van Winkle in my elementary school play altered my genetic code, I told no one. In my family, acting was a hobby, not a career path. Like Peter Parker, I did not reveal my new powers, the ability to become someone else on stage. Instead, I vowed to explore my developing skills in silence.
If my formative science years taught me anything, it was to observe, hypothesize, test, and conclude. In middle school, I approached my mutant abilities in much the same way. I participated in a drama elective, watched those around me critically, took notes, and mimicked the character traits I observed. I'd dress the part of a recluse, nerd, jock, or Goth and phased invisibly from one clique to the next. Not yet ready to show my real identity, I considered each day an audition and the world my stage.
In high school, my meticulously developed characters collided with reality. Here social membership depended on reputations, class choices, and extracurricular activities. Refusing to be typecast, I struggled through freshman year and wanted nothing more than keep my head down and get good grades. Then, in sophomore year, I was invited to play Willie Lopez in my school's production of Ghost: The Musical. Entering rehearsal mid-season, Clark Kent thrust into an environment of superheroes, each of whom had already saved the world dozens of times, with no way to prove that I had once known how to fly. I endeavored to integrate myself and follow the inside jokes, but I was a "normal" until proven otherwise.
Recalling the joy and pride I'd felt when I'd last used my chameleon powers and armed with several non-lyrical lines, twenty minutes of stage combat, and my drama teacher’s inspiring guidance, I poured my heart into my performance and was nominated for best supporting actor by the National Youth Arts organization. More important than this, my parents saw the elation I felt on stage, the determined actor beneath the studious boy, and the thespian I feared they would never understand. They told me they were happy to support my dream. With the Kryptonite door blown away, I felt I could now fully explore my passion. I won a Buckingham Scholarship from the Shakespeare Society and performed Shakespeare’s Sonnets at the Old Globe. I put on a one-person show at the San Diego Fringe Festival, garnered lead roles in drama, earned elite rankings in speech and debate, and founded a spoken word poetry club. I advocated creativity in education as a TEDx speaker, was invited to speak at the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture meeting, and wore my actor cape with pride.
Professor Xavier's school for mutants served as a second home for students with special powers, champions who wanted to use their skills to make the world a better place. I know what it is like to be Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, and Peter Parker, and look forward to the future where I can say "Shazam!" along with a family of superheroes.
