Zashiki-warashi is a spirit from Japanese folklore believed to reside in traditional houses. These childlike spirits are thought to bring good fortune to the household they inhabit.
According to legend, a household with a zashiki-warashi will experience prosperity and good fortune. However, if the spirit leaves, misfortune may follow. These spirits are usually depicted as small children with bobbed hair and are known for their playful nature, often causing harmless mischief like moving objects or making strange noises at night.
The origins of the zashiki-warashi legend are most commonly associated with the Iwate prefecture in northern Japan. Many old inns and traditional homes in the region have stories of sightings and mysterious phenomena attributed to these spirits. Today, some people still believe in their presence and consider them a symbol of good luck.
