Today's Topic " Downfall of Tom and Jerry"
The original Tom and Jerry shorts (1940-1958) were not completely banned worldwide, but they were heavily censored, edited, and occasionally pulled from circulation by various broadcasters (like the BBC) due to two major, interconnected issues:
Mammy Two Shoes: The domestic maid was a caricature of a Black woman that perpetuated racial stereotypes. In later broadcasts, her scenes were often cut, or her voice was redubbed.Blackface Gags: Several episodes, including "His Mouse Friday," "Casanova Cat" (1951), and "Mouse Cleaning" (1948), featured characters being blackened by expl*s-*ns, s*ot, or cigar smoke—a visual that echoed the offensive "blackface" minstrel tradition. These episodes were subsequently eliminated from the Blu-ray series or streaming platforms.
