Ukhrul: 1st Ginger Festival Celebrated at Hungpung village
The Self-Help Group (SHG) Federation of Kazipphung in Hungpung village celebrated its first Ginger Festival at Kazipphung High School Ground, on 9 December, 2024. The festival, themed "Ginger for Sustenance of Livelihood," featured notable attendees including Ukhrul DC Zuringla Kengoo and retired bureaucrat Martin Muivah as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
During the event, DC Kengoo inaugurated the festival by cutting the ceremonial ribbon and toured stalls showcasing various indigenous varieties of ginger and other crops. She praised the SHG Federation for promoting local ginger and enhancing the rural economy.
Ukhrul SDO Dinringam Kamei, UDWIN director Ringyuichon Vashum, and Ukhrul District Forest Officer (DFO) Laishram Gitla also attended the festival as special guests. They provided suggestions for improving organic ginger production and expanding market access beyond the district.
SHG Federation president K Chuihaola highlighted the challenges of market access for local ginger growers and emphasized the need for mass production. Leishimi, a member of the SHG, revealed that 14 SHGs participated, collectively producing over 10,000 kilograms of ginger.
The festival featured varieties like ‘Huira,’ priced at Rs. 200 per kilogram (50% off market price), and others at Rs. 50 per kilogram.
