Weston-super-Mare Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】

Located on the coast of Somerset, around 20 miles southwest of Bristol, is the town of Weston-super-Mare.

The name comes from a combination of Anglo-Saxon (Weston just means a settlement in the west) and Latin - with super-Mare translating to 'over the sea'. How it came to have a Latin-derived name in the first place is something of a mystery though.

Like many seaside towns in Britain, Weston-super-Mare was, for several centuries, a small fishing village. The 1801 census records it as having a population of just 108. Then in 1841 the railway arrived in Weston, courtesy of the Bristol and Exeter Railway prior to its merger with Great Western Railway, the current owners of the station. Visitors were now able to reach Weston-super-Mare from many parts of the country, including South Wales via paddle steamer.

It follows then that much of the architecture in Weston-super-Mare is Victorian. The town hall seen at the end of the video, for instance, was completed in 1856. There are, however, some more modern buildings in parts that were damaged during the Second World War despite Weston being an evacuee destination. Side note: if you want to know what a 100% (more-or-less) Victorian town would look like, I'd recommend Llandudno.

Weston-super-Mare's famous Grand Pier dates back to 1904. There is an older pier to its north - namely Birnbeck Pier. Opening in 1867, this pier connected the mainland to Birnbeck Island; all 3 acres of it at least. Birnbeck Pier closed in 1994 and is now derelict. The Grand Pier, however, entertains many visitors to this day.

Famous people from Weston-super-Mare include John Cleese, Jeffrey Archer, and the late Jill Dando, who has a park in the town named after her (Jill's Garden).
