After the 2016 Rio Olympics, FIE increased the block-out timing in sabre fencing (and did something weird with the en guard lines that nobody liked and lasted for like 3 competitions) which made the wait and react style of defence in sabre impossible to use. Dolniceanu in particular had a very difficult time in adjusting to the timing change and perhaps you can see why by watching this bout. Interestingly, Dolniceanu had also won the Moscow Grand Prix in 2014 and 2015.

On the Right: KIM Junghwan 金政煥, Korea
Kim adjusted well to the timing change by winning two individual events before this Grand Prix - the 2017 Warsaw World Cup and 2017 Seoul Grand Prix. Kim had won Bronze at the Rio Olympics, and was the reigning World No. 1 at the time of this event. Kim had also won the Moscow Grand Prix in 2016.

Match-up:
These two met once after the 2016 Timing Change - Kim defeated Dolniceanu at the 2017 Seoul Grand Prix 15/6. Even before then Kim had a very good record against Dolniceanu - winning 4 of their previous 5 match ups. The one bout that Dolniceanu had been able to win, however, was the Final of the 2014 Moscow Grand Prix 15/10 (his first major non-zonal FIE individual Gold Medal).
