The old Nagoya Airport at Komaki, now Nagoya Municipal Airport, was not a big airport and the runway was not that long. Northwest Airlines flew 747-400s daily on a route DTW-NGO-MNL for years. The DTW-NGO was almost entirely dedicated to servicing the automobile industries of Detroit and Nagoya. Even today though the Manila segment has been discontinued, the flight serves as a connection for the workers and families of the industry.
When departing from Nagoya, the 747-400 was weight restricted. As you can see, the plane would spool up before entering the runway and then just hit it. On arrival, they landed right at the edge of the runway and used the entire thing to stop.
The first time I flew to Nagoya, I had a chance to chat with one of the captains. He said it was one of the most challenging runways for 747 pilots that NWA flew into. I remember him saying, "Though not as exciting as Kai Tak, it was not an easy one."
