Cocoa Farming Taking Shape In North
Lira University has come out to champion cocoa growing in Northern Uganda. A committee of thirty senior staff members have been set by the university to do due diligence on the high crop.
The initiative will also include deeper research on the crop to support the farming communities currently growing cocoa on a large scale.
A committee of thirty recently set by Lira University has commissioned their work to do due diligence on Cocoa farming. The team visited Trinity Mixed farm in Dokolo district one of the excelling farms in cocoa farming in northern Uganda.
The chocolate industry consumes around 43% of all cocoa produced. USA and Europe are the major importers of Cocoa. A kilogram of Cocoa is currently selling at bout thirty thousand shillings globally.
The move by Lira University is to gather necessary information for the university to establish a farm at campus and spearhead research on the crop to support the current mushrooming cocoa farmers in the region.
The farm has since raised hundreds of seedlings which farmers have planted across the region. The current challenge is technical support in raising the new crop in the region.
Cocoa is a perennial crop that begins fruiting at two and a half years. It is harvested twice a year, earning about 13 million UGX per acre annually.
