Bob Murphy loved the Funny Pages. He said that the comic strips are the best part of the newspaper. But, have you ever seen the original comic art? For over 100 years kids and adults have headed straight to the Sunday Funnies … the comic section of the newspaper. There was humor, adventure and excitement spread over pages of colorful comic strips. Bob Murphy never lost that excitement. He started clipping out his favorite strips when he was in grammar school. In the early 1960s he began collecting the original comic strip art. These were the actual drawings and he ended up with hundreds of pieces of original art from over 200 artists. His first art came from Charles Schultz … Peanuts. That just fueled his passion. All the famous funnies are in his collection – Dick Tracy, Flash Gordon, Little Orphan Annie, Prince Valiant, Li’l Abner and many more. His favorite was Terry and the Pirates. His oldest art was from a 1923 strip called Freckles.
Bob Murphy was the Advertising Art Director of the Atlanta Journal & Constitution newspaper for 41 years. Much of his collection came straight from the creators of the newspaper comics. Bob told me that the comics strips are the only true, America art form. Bob Murphy was doing his best to preserve it. This story aired on WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News in 1975.
