It must have been around 1450 when in the Dutch town of Den Bosch a talented lad was born: Hieronimous van Aken. The family are painters by trade, so little Jerome learns the ropes from them. Though he doesn't paint many ropes, really. To distinguish himself from his relatives, he chooses the name Bosch. To this day, nobody knows how he came up with that...
Den Bosch is a very religious town, where the priests give lively sermons about heaven and hell. That clearly inspires Jerome, because his paintings don't just feature regular people and saints, but also more than a few demons and mythical creatures. His famous triptych 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' depicts hell so vividly you'd think he had been there himself.
During his lifetime Jerome becomes a real celebrity. He has a massive workshop with many students, plus a fair number of copycats. That's why we're not quite sure about many paintings attributed to him. And even if we are, we struggle to understand what his strange jokes and symbols are meant to tell us. In the year 1516 Bosch kicks the paint bucket. Let's hope he never found out if his depiction of hell was correct...
