The Story (& Sights) of Comuna 13 | Medellin Colombia

Hey World Creators!

Today we explore the vibrant area of Communa 13! This beautiful hot spot is one of the 16 neighborhoods in the urban metropolis of Medellin Colombia! This is one of the absolute MUST VISIT sites in not just Medellin, but all of Colombia. It is known for its street art and outdoor escalators.

This colorful attraction was once one of the most dangerous and notorious barrios (neighborhoods) in all of South America. It was used by guerilla and paramilitary operations and heavily involved in the drug trafficking route.

For decades this neighborhood was dangerous. The city and government tried to take it back by force, which proved problematic. But in the late 2000's the city turned to a more humanistic approach. Medellin integrated it into the city and connected it to the rest of the city with metro stops and a cable car.

Slowly, the frightening Barrio became a spot for the arts. This are exploded in color. The government installed a series of 6 escalators to help the citizens and visitors of the neighborhood to get around with ease.

Communa 13 has changed its stars. It went from a black scar to a tourist bucket list destination. There is everything from beautiful street art, to skilled performers trying to make some extra cash. And of course, some of the best street food you can imagine! Sodas Micheladas (sour lime and fruit sodas) and fresh fried empanadas! The fresh home made street food is to die for, and quite easy to find!

Be sure to add Communa 13 to your Colombia itinerary! The views at the top are worth the escalator ride up! ;)
