✨Today we're shining the spotlight on this magnificent work #onview in our African Art Gallery.
"Horned Gate" combines the non-figural structure of a portal with the organic shapes of horns resembling those of Sudanese cattle. Although Nour has visired the theme of gates in his other works, Cattle play an even more central role in his sculpture. In particular they are tied to recollections of his childhood-suggesting a passage through time to the cultural landscape in which he was raised.
Amir Nour was born in Shendi, Sudan and studied art in Khartoum and London before arriving in the United States under the auspices of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1969. His abstract sculptures are noted for their smooth finishes and rhythmic forms, evoking landscapes from his childhood in Sudan.
Amir I. M. Nour, Sudanese, b. 1939, "Horned Gate" (detail), 1974, Bronze, Gift of Marcia and Irwin Hersey
