Mali’s Legendary Salt Odyssey : The Last Great Salt Caravan of the Sahara | SLICE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

At the edge of the great Sahara desert in the north of Mali, lives a community of Kounta nomad. For centuries, every year, the Kountas travel across the desert on camels in search of white gold, otherwise known as salt. The precious mineral is their livelihood. Extremely expensive, the Kountas sell it on the markets and it is then distributed all over western Africa.

This great salt odyssey is called Azalai.

We will follow M’Barak and M’BouilIrak on the adventure of a lifetime. They have been chosen to lead the great caravan of camels for 1500 km through the Sahara desert, to the salt mines of southern Algeria. For forty days and forty nights, they will walk without ever stopping, facing many hardships: storms, hunger, thirst, fatigue, cold and heat.

As they follow their ancestors’ footsteps on the Azalai trail, they know that the fate of their people now depends on the success of their mission.
