Murdeshwar (Murudeshwara - ಮುರುಡೇಶ್ವರ) is a town in Uttara Kannada district in the state of Karnataka, India, and lies on the coast of the Laccadive Sea. It contains the world's third tallest Shiva statue, as well as the Murudeshwara Temple. The town has a railway station on the Mangalore–Mumbai Konkan railway route.

The Murudeshwar Temple in Karnataka, India is associated with a legend about the demon king Ravana of Lanka and the Atma-Linga, a divine symbol of Shiva:
According to legend, Lord Shiva blessed Ravana with the Atma-Linga, which granted him immense power.
However, Lord Vishnu was concerned that Ravana might misuse the Atma-Linga to gain immortality and cause destruction on Earth.
Vishnu asked Ganesha to prevent Ravana from taking the Atma-Linga to Lanka.
As Ravana approached Gokarna, Vishnu made it look like dusk by blotting out the sun.
Ravana gave the Atma-Linga to a sage named Kanduka, but Ganesha disguised himself as a boy and tricked Kanduka into placing the Atma-Linga on the ground.
When Ravana realized he'd been tricked, he tried to uproot the Atma-Linga, which caused a piece of it to fall on a small hill called Kanduka, surrounded by the sea on three sides.
The spot where the Atma-Linga fell became the site of the Murudeshwar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for its colossal statue of Shiva, which is the second-tallest in the world.
