Androids don't have a gender, they're just nuts and bolts, right? Ex Machina explores the ethics of AI creation and the implications of programming gender.
We thought this concept was perfectly summarised in a line from the film, when Caleb asks Nathan: "Why did you give her sexuality? An AI doesn't need a gender. She could have been a grey box".
In this video, try to answer Caleb's question. Why do androids have a gender? We look at the representation of female androids in science fiction and how their depiction in cinema comments on notions of womanhood, feminity, and gender roles of their time.
From sex objects to femme fatale temptresses, robot women have often been objectified in cinema. With the rise of feminism and women's movements, have female androids managed to escape the confines of their creators (and directors) in modern cinema?
