Schoonheid = the beauty of cleanliness.

Clean air, clean water, clean environments to live in – these should all be standard, not a luxury.

Inspired by this uniquely Dutch word, Daan Roosegaarde is using the concept of schoonheid to drive his Smog Free Project, giving clean air to people in cities.   

We shouldn’t just accept air pollution as a fact of life. Schoonheid is an activator for change, for citizens, makers, NGOs and governments to value and empower schoonheid as a creative force.

“We are all makers, not consumers. We should be a part of the solution instead of the problem,” says Roosegaarde

At the heart of the Smog Free Project is the Smog Free Tower, which cleans 30,000m3 of air per hour. The tower sucks in dirty air, filters it using patented ozon-free ion technology, and then releases clean air back into the atmosphere.

The beauty is that the smog collected is turned into jewellery, transforming waste into the sublime. By buying a Smog Free Ring you donate 1,000m3 of clean air to the city where the Smog Free tower is located.

Also part of the project is the Smog Free Bicycle, which creates clean air as you cycle.
