RIP Total Entertainer: Celebrities, fans mourn death of OPM legend Rico J. Puno
Celebrities and fans took to social media to mourn the death of OPM legend Rico J. Puno early Tuesday.
Puno died of cardiac arrest, according to his daughter Tosca Camille Puno-Ramos.
The veteran singer underwent open heart surgery in 2015. He underwent an angioplasty last December 2017 and recently got a new pacemaker.
Before his death, Puno shared his excitement to topbill the concert "Sana Tatlo Ang Puso Ko" with comediennes Marissa Sanchez and Giselle Sanchez.
Anna Puno, the singer's sister-in-law, expressed shock after hearing news of Puno's death.
"Numbed with grief, I would like to call on all entertainers in the OPM Industry as well as his worldwide fans to stop for a moment and say a prayer to one of the most respected singers in the country," she said in an Instagram post.
"I cannot help but say it was serendipitous that Starmedia prepared a solo 40th Anniversary concert for him and a US tour with the OPM stalwarts and colleagues just recently. Little did I know that this is his final bow in the live entertainment world. We will forever miss the Total Entertainer...but his songs will forever be cherished in our hearts."
Singer legend Rico J. Puno has passed away at the age of 65 years old.
As announced by his sister-in-law Anna Puno on Instagram, it was with deep regret that they shared Puno’s passing. Puno wrote, "I am seized with deep emotional shock when I found out that our OPM King Kuya Rico J. Puno has passed away this morning... We will forever miss the TOTAL ENTERTAINER, but his songs will forever be cherished in our hearts.”
According to Puno’s daughter, Tosca Camille Puno-Ramos, the singer died to a cardiac arrest. Back in 2015, Puno underwent an open heart surgery. He last December 2017, he also underwent angioplasty and just recently got a new pacemaker.
Puno made his name during the 70’s with iconic OPM songs like "Macho Gwapito," "May Bukas Pa," and "Magkasuyo Buong Gabi."
Several big names in the industry expressed their condolences to Puno’s death. Fellow singer Lea Salonga said, “Rest In Peace, Rico J. Puno. Your distinctive voice that lent itself to so much of the music of my childhood will not be forgotten.”
Zsa Zsa Padila also expressed their regret, “Shocked to hear about your sudden passing. We will always remember your beautiful songs and your unique way of interpreting them.”
Gary Valenciano also shared an old video of him sharing a song with Puno. He called the Puno, “The Kapitan” and that he will be greatly missed.
