But that one is nearly 2 years old and we've learnt a lot since then.

For the last few months we've been testing a football drill that helps develop scanning skills in youth footballers in more of a match context.

The key to coaching scanning is to let the drill/activity develop the unconscious habit of scanning.

If we as football coaches simply tell a player to 'check your shoulder' or shout 'scan' we essentially have kids who are looking left and right without really knowing what they are looking for.

We need to make activities that force children to look for team mates, space, defenders etc without us having to tell them.

Give this one a try with your players.

It can easily be adapted to make it easier or harder depending on the level of your team.
