Weekly Vlog #18 🌾🕊️
This week started in Illinois, where I stayed with my mom and her friend after taking the train from Seattle. My mom and I have a complicated relationship — we didn’t speak for about 15 years, and reconnecting has brought up a lot of emotions.
Being back around her stirred up memories from my childhood — especially being raised around an alcoholic stepdad, and how hard it was to find the courage to leave that environment. My mom didn’t really make it easy back then, and some of those old dynamics resurfaced during my visit.
But instead of running from it, I sat with it. I got in touch with my younger self — the girl who went through all of it. I grieved for her, honored her, and in doing that, realized how far I’ve come.
There’s no easy resolution to relationships like this… but being there helped me soften my lens, and grow even more in compassion — for her, for me, and for the story we both carry.
After that, we hit the road again and headed to Ohio to visit my little brothers and catch up with a few close friends.
